THEY’RE the best brass in the business.
Cairns Brass is made up of local students, tradies, music teachers and professionals and they cleaned up at the Australian National Band Championships 2015 in Sydney’s Seymoure Theatre yesterday.
The band was named champions in the B Grade section ahead of nine other brass bands from around Australia.
Their repertoire included four pieces; a hymn, a set piece, a stage march and a major work.
Cairns’ renditions of ‘O Magnum Mysterium’ and ‘The Australasian’ won them first place in the hymn and stage march categories.
Their set piece and major work won them silver.
“We’re just elated, it’s really hard to do well in all four events and on aggregate we’ve come away with the championship so to have won is phenomenal, we’re all walking on clouds,” conductor Jon Christodoulides said.
“The performance is entirely dependent on the players but behind the scenes we have a really hard working committee and executive.
“To perform well is always a great feeling but to have the quality of our work recognised by an adjudicator is amazing for the players and all their hard work.”
The band has been rehearsing the songs since December last year.
