City of Discovery Brass Band was formed in 1996 by a group of friends who wanted to create a fun and friendly organisation where brass banding can be youthful, energetic, and enjoyable. The band today is testament to their goal, as many of the players have been members for over 10 years and we enjoy a relatively low turnover in players, and a healthy social life together with no playing involved!
The band compete in a variety of contests throughout the year, and have enjoyed much success at the all important Scottish Championship Contest, finishing in the top 5 at the Scottish Championships 9 out of 15 times, and qualifying to represent Scotland at the National Finals on 5 occasions. In 2006 the band achieved 4th place in the 2nd section band at the National Finals, one of the best results achieved by a Scottish 2nd section band at the National Finals in recent times.
Building upon their 3rd placement in the 2010 Scottish Championships, the band achieved a clear win enjoying 1st place again with an inspired rendition of the epic "Resurgam" by Eric Ball, and picking up the best instrumentalist prize for Neil Watson's outstanding euphonium performance. City of Discovery Band also perform various concerts and public appearances throughout the calendar year; Free concerts at council bandstands and public parks, turning on the city centre Christmas lights, concerts within local churches, Carolling for Xmas shoppers etc. We perform a mix of both simple and taxing music covering all genres - classical, pop, film soundtracks, Scottish folk and traditional Brass Band.
Over the years the band have engaged the services of local conductors - Jimmy Tonner, Scott Barker, Allan Kelman, Bruce Fraser, Bruce Wallace and most recently Eoin Tonner have taken up their baton to lead the band in their own unique way, injecting their style into the bands performance and enjoying many successful concerts and competitions.
