Irelandcolliery Chesterfieldband
Little is known about the history of the band, although we believe a brass band has been in existence in the Chesterfield area for over 150 years, and the Chesterfield Band won the UK National championships in 1862.
Since the decline of the coal industry in the UK which provided much needed funding to the brass band movement, many bands found it a struggle to survive. Some bands folded altogether but many merged, and this is what the Ireland Colliery, the Chesterfield Band, and Pearsons Pottery Band did in the late eighties, to form what has now become ICCB. Colliery brass bands are part of the cultural history and heritage of the local area and the Ireland Colliery Chesterfield Band, through its players and committee are committed to maintain this link for future generations.
The current band has a mixture of youth and experience, led by Musical Director, Mr Ian Knapton. Ian brought the band back to the contesting stage in 2004, and as a result the band in 2009 had its best contesting results for over a decade.
