In 2013 Onchan Silver Band appointed a new Musical Director. The post had not been perminantly filled since Paul Dunderdale left in 2012. The bands new conductor, David Mapp is determined to Make OSB a brass band with a difference, a strong identity, and with increased visibility, in order to increase membership and maximise the charity’s service to local players and the island’s culture circuit. He intends this tol be done by execution of the following policies:
1) Incorporate unfamiliar music into our repertoire.
2) Performing in new locations/venues.
3) Initiating collaborative projects with other artists.
4) Develop marching technique and make marching a part of our identity.
5) Maintain and develop an excellent standard of performance of the traditional repertoire of marches, popular music arrangements and film music.
To date, the band is well on its way to addressing all of these points!
Back in 2007 we marked our 70th Anniversary in style with a joint concert with one of the leading bands in Britain (then called the “BT Band”)
In 2010 Onchan Silver Band returned to compete on the national stage – Picking up 2 trophies and much praise from all who were there!
Also, in the same year, an ensemble made up of solely Onchan members achieved the record mark of 97 in the Manx Music Festival! We followed that up with an extremely successful performance in the 2011 Festival –The main band recording a 2nd place and two 3rd places within the main competition!
The Band is split into different groups - Osbeebies (our newest recruits), the Junior band, the Senior band and Baron Van Chindel's Oom Pah Band.
Look out for us out and about all year round – From Christmas carols to Bavarian “Oom Pah” nights! The band is a regular fixture at the Tynwald Day celebrations where we kick off the National Day by leading the parade to the famous Tynwald Hill.
We are a local band from Onchan in the Isle of Man. A very sociable and friendly group, we are always keen to find new members to join our love of music making.
We're a non profit charity from Onchan in the Isle of Man. We have a junior band which is run by members of the senior players in their spare time. We provide tuition, instruments and music to keep brass banding alive in the community and provide a safe place for young and old to enjoy music making!
