Rebirth Brass Band drummer Derrick Tabb unviels plans for Treme music lounge

Rebirth Brass Band drummer Derrick Tabb plans to open a live music lounge down in the Treme by the end of 2015. Treme Hideaway, which is slated to open at 1234 N. Claiborne Ave., near Esplanade, will have bands ranging from alternative rock to jazz.

New Breed Brass Band is scheduled to play Sunday nights. Trombonist Glen David Andrews and Tabb's own Rebirth Brass Band will make monthly appearances.

 

The concept is to offer what Tabb thinks is a much needed space in the city for a diverse array of music. All genres are welcome. 

 

"You could have any sort of music. You see the little bands out in the French Quarter and I can't tell you what kind of music it is, but I want them there too," Tabb said. "I want to have a day where you can play any kind of world music. You can play Indian music. I don't want it to be restricted."

 

With Tabb, a member of the musical Andrews clan, at the helm, Treme Hideaway will inevitably have that New Orleans flavor. It's less than a mile away from Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar, a live music joint opened by his relatives James Andrews, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, and Travis "Trumpet Black" Hill, who died in May.

 

"Can you think of anywhere better? I have lived in the Treme all of my life. I've just been in about every house in the Treme coming up as a teenager," Tabb said.

"Everything that happened in my life, that made a difference in my life came from the Treme. I don't even think I would be playing music otherwise."

 

Tabb hopes Treme Hideaway will be up and running in August. He has signed the lease and is working on getting final permits from the city.

 

Treme Hideaway's bar menu will feature seafood with Creole spices and, of course, everything will be put on pause for Monday night football when the Saints are playing.
