Commonly known as the "Artillery" or "Arty" Band, this group has a history of over 140 years continuous service as a Territorial Forces unit of the NZ Army. The band is based in Auckland under the Command of the Auckland/Northland Battalion Group.
To trace the beginnings of the Band it was necessary to go back to 1845 and the Maori War, to the story of the 58th Rutland Regiment from which the band claims it’s descent.
History records too, that many men of the 58th took their discharges in young Auckland and some of these men joined the Band of the Auckland Volunteer Rifles when the Militia was formed in 1858.
Thus the story of the 58th blends with that of the Militia days and in turn with the story of “A” Battery and it’s Band. Those early years were hard ones but the Band played on to become later the Auckland Garrison Artillery Band.
More changes of name followed down the years but the Band itself kept right on. Today, it is known as the Band of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery, Northern Military District. This is perhaps a long title but beneath it all it’s still the same old “Artillery Band.”
It is this spirit which has kept the Band going for 100 years … and more.
