he Mighty Souls Brass Band is a collective of the top echelon of Memphis musicians. We are the drummers and horn players you hear on so many of the records that come out of Memphis. When you go see your favorite touring band, those horn players on the sideline are probably from Memphis. And they probably play with the Mighty Souls. Except when the Mighty Souls play, we don't just play for 10 minutes in a 2 hour show! No, we are the show and you better be ready!
Sean Murphy (brass bass, leader) long dreamed of a band derived from the New Orleans brass band tradition but with a singularly Memphis sensibility. Then one day fate (i.e. a gig) brought Sean together with Jim Spake (saxes), Jeremy Shrader (trumpet, vocals), and Earl Lowe (drums). We came together to play a NOLA style funeral and that long held dream began to grow into a reality. It took a final shove from Victor Sawyer (trombone) for Sean to realize the time had come - that this band was going to happen one way or another!
Thus came to be, in late 2012, the Mighty Souls Brass Band was born. The membership of Mighty Souls is fluid and ever changing like that of the Mississippi River (from which our name springs.) It has to be because these musicians are in too high demand! Performances usually range from 5-7 players but can include as many as 14 musicians!
